I love behind-the-scenes stories about apps, which I find helpful as I work on my first one for Windows Phone. Today Microsoft’s Craig Kerwien provides the creation story for the official Office Blogs app, which hit Marketplace last week. In the post, Craig talks about how the effort went from a weekend DIY project—he’s a hobbyist, not a full-time developer—to an official Microsoft-sponsored app, and sketches out how he coded it using some of Chris Koenig’s popular starter kits (whic...
As readers of this blog, you know that I like to travel. Some may even say I have a wanderlust; this new spin-word is German and breaks down to exactly what it means: a lust for wandering. It’s for people who don’t just like to visit places but need to wander through them – meander, grow and learn as part of a new environment. I love my job a bit too much to give it all up for a lifetime of wandering but I try to book in all the travel I can. This month, I’m headed to Nashville for the m...
Windows services enable code to run in the background, even if no user is logged on. These background services provide a lot of useful functionality while minimizing interference with the user’s desktop. Services have been around for a long time and have proven to be quite useful. Many application developers, OEMs, and IT organizations use services. On a typical system, this can result in a large number of services running at a given time. For example, my machine has about 110 services runni...
Vista introduced two closely related features: Application Restart and Application Recovery. These features are designed to eliminate much of the pain caused by the unexpected termination of your application, whether as a result of an unhandled exception, a “hard hang,” or any other crash. Application Recovery applies to applications that have a “document” or any other in-memory information that might be lost when the application closes unexpectedly. Application Restart applies to all ...
This blog post is being published on behalf of HP. With the growing demand for technology in the classroom, HP is proud to be working with Windows technologies to address the need for affordable computing and expand the number of computer seats in schools. Due to current budgetary constraints in education, schools are looking beyond the initial cost of technology deployment to total cost of ownership, maintenance costs and IT support. This focus is leading more schools to evaluate alternative ...
I’m Kurt Brockett, Director of UX Evangelism at IdentityMine. We’re a user experience (UX) company specializing in Microsoft presentation technologies. In 2005 we hitched a ride on the Avalon train that morphed into Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) released in .NET 3.0. This is the technology root that has grown to include Silverlight, Microsoft Surface and most recently the preferred way to build touch applications in Windows 7. Our foray into Sports & Entertainment started wit...
There is some interesting discussion happening today regarding netbook sales, namely that new devices may be negatively impacting sales and growth. Paul Thurrott has done a nice job of separating hype from reality. He references IDC’s forecast that 45.6 million mininotebooks (aka netbooks) will be sold in 2011 and 60.3 million units in 2013. We spend a lot of time checking out the new PCs in all form factors, and it is no wonder that people are buying lots of netbooks from our partners....
I have exciting news about a special event called Windows Summit 2010. For those who don’t know, Windows Summit 2010 is a special event designed for hardware and software designers, developers, engineers, testers and other technology professionals who want to learn how to build great products on Windows 7. Originally, the event was to take place here at the Microsoft Campus in Redmond, WA. However, to make this more accessible to a larger audience we decided to make Windows Summit 2010 an onli...
